The modern emphasis is on everyone dealing with their own stresses individually rather than working together to change the structural causes of these stresses.

A very astute observation . Which is why most service clubs and volunteer groups are comprised of shrinking and aged members. The young and middle aged are either too busy on their cell phones, X-boxes or at yoga .

We continue to address symptoms like an over-the-counter druggist. Food pantries, food stamps, medicaid, housing assistance, homeless shelters, etc… when what we really need is a major increase in the minimum wage combined with a big change to make our tax code more progressive and simpler. More income to working poor and more taxes on the wealthy.
